A Story, explained the teacher to the class, is like a stone cast into a still pool of water. The initial splash is the inciting incident. It is the writer's job to follow the ripples and report the observations to the reader.

The class nodded in agreement, save for one student, who quietly muttered, "Who cares about the ripples - what happened to the fish?"
