What is RSS? What’s a web feed?
RSS (short for ‘Really Simple Syndication’) is a way for you to check websites for new content without having to actually visit the website.
Website publishers produce a ‘web feed’, usually indicated by an orange icon that reads ‘RSS’, ‘XML’, ‘FEED’ or using the RSS icon ‘
‘.
Why should I use RSS?
RSS helps you reach more content, in a more timely manner. Rather than hunting and pecking for new material from your favourite sites, you will know exactly what site has new material and if it is worth your time to visit and read. If you follow more than a dozen sites, RSS can become a great time saver.
How do I subscribe to a feed?
Copy the link to a program designed to read feeds, called a news aggregator; to your web browser or email program capable of reading RSS feeds, such as FireFox’s ‘Live Bookmarks’ or Internet Explorer’s ‘webfeeds’; or to a web based news aggregator, such as Google Reader, Bloglines or My Yahoo.
Some of the web based aggregators offer a ‘one-click’ subscription, however these are not consistantly used across the net.
Can I subscribe to just a specific category?
Yes, navigate to the category you wish to subscribe to and add ‘feed’ to the end of the web address. For example, to subscribe to just news and opinions, you would use http://www.theelusivefish.com/articles/category/news-and-opinion/feed/.
