Great point, great cartoon. I used it at http://healthcare.zdnet.com/?p=3303 But I noticed after I posted that the pioneer is dressed female. The caption should say "tell my husband."

You are right on - most products are all the same, it is how we market them that makes one sell better than the next. Someone like a dentist might want to advertise a dental patient reward like getting the girl with a bright white smile rather than focus on how what he does is the same as what every other dentist does. I've found this works really well.

Hi James,
In my opinion, SEO should be focused on the last letter of the acronymn: Optimization. It should be about ensuring the design of the site is not impinging upon the search tools, but rather clearly communicating what the site is about. It's role should be in keeping the design side from tripping up the functional side.

Sadly, too many take SEO to mean 'how do I force my site to the front of the line whether it deserves to be ther or not'. At best, they see visitors as something to be bought, at worst, try to cheat their way to visitors. I suspect someone will buy that Twitter account just to have some 100 sites blog about them, and those 100 blog reactions bump their site in PageRank.

As for Calvin's father...
pretty well says it.
